Reading Instruction
Reading is the hallmark of the Grammar School experience and an strong emphasis is given to phonics instruction, reading, and comprehension. Faculty members for grades K-2 are trained in the Brainspring Phonics First® Orton-Gillingham based phonics program which is fully accredited by the IDA (International Dyslexia Association) and IMSLEC (International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council). Teachers typically make reading a part of the nightly homework and parents are encouraged to read regularly to younger students. The annual Read-A-Thon is an exciting time for students as they read for minutes and enjoy activities related to reading all month long.
Recommended Reading Lists are provided for parents and students to help select books for reading beyond the regular curriculum. Please check back regularly as these lists are periodically updated and expanded.
The Grammar School Course of Study outlines our entire K‐6 program and each curricula selected is carefully scrutinized for academic excellence through a strong foundation of the basics while challenging and delighting students. Weekly chapels, daily physical education, music classes, getting to know classic artists and their famous works, creating their own art, and student field trips, round out the Grammar School’s student experience at Heritage Oak School.
Heritage Oak is pleased to offer Student Support Services on a limited basis for qualifying students who are able to be in the classroom with additional assistance to help close their learning gaps.
