GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Grades K-6

At Heritage Oak, our Grammar School program for grades 1‐6 is uniquely structured to meet your child where they are developmentally and prepare them for the middle school years ahead. Designed to emphasize the classical education model through a biblical worldview, students flourish as they work with Christian teachers who seek to help them grow both spiritually and academically through a curricula that strikes the right balance of discovery, hands‐on‐learning, and memory work through various songs, jingles, chants, and lots of smiles!

Grammar School Course of Study

The Grammar School Course of Study outlines our entire K‐6 program and each curricula selected is carefully scrutinized for academic excellence through a strong foundation of the basics while challenging and delighting students. Weekly chapels, daily physical education, music classes, getting to know classic artists and their famous works, creating their own art, and student field trips, round out the Grammar School’s student experience at Heritage Oak School.

Heritage Oak is pleased to offer Student Support Services on a limited basis for qualifying students who are able to be in the classroom with additional assistance to help close their learning gaps.

We invite you to come see the classical Christian school experience firsthand by taking a tour of Heritage Oak’s classrooms live!

Reading Instruction

Reading is the hallmark of the Grammar School experience and an strong emphasis is given to phonics instruction, reading, narration and comprehension. Faculty members for grades K-2 are trained in the Brainspring Phonics First® Orton-Gillingham based phonics program which is fully accredited by the IDA (International Dyslexia Association) and IMSLEC (International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council). Teachers typically make reading a part of the nightly homework and parents are encouraged to read regularly to younger students.

Participation in our regular Read-A-Thons (held twice annually) are designed to encourage a love of reading, building reader fluency, and discovering different genres of literature.

Recommended Reading Lists are provided for parents and students to help select books for reading beyond the regular curriculum. Please check back regularly as these lists are periodically updated and expanded.

Homework Philosophy

In crafting our homework policy, we have taken into consideration the following:

    • all children need daily unstructured play time (even if it is only half an hour!)
    • many students participate in after school activities such as music lessons, sports, theater, etc.
    • children benefit from learning to contribute to the family through household chores
    • parents need time to lead their children in family worship and devotions each evening
    • Heritage Oak is not really a “worksheet” school and we don’t use a lot of workbooks
    • parents are not always confident they are teaching their child the “right way” that the teacher wants the assignment completed
    • our goal is that every student would become an avid reader and love good books

Based on these priorities and needs, our teachers assign homework according to the guidelines below:

Kindergarten – Grade 3

    • homework is only assigned Monday through Thursday nights
    • no more than 30-40 min. of homework
    • nightly reading assignments (15 min/night)
    • drilling math facts (5 min/night)
    • practicing memory work (10 min/night – can often be incorporated into family worship)

Grades 4 – 6

    • homework is only assigned Monday through Thursday nights
    • no more than 50-60 min. of homework
    • nightly reading assignments (25-30 min/night)
    • practicing math concepts as needed (15 min/night)
    • drilling math facts (5 min/night)
    • practicing memory work (10 min/night – can often be incorporated into family worship)
